Many changes have taken place in training to be a nurse resulting in a variety of schools and programs from which to choose. Arkansas alone has over 20 schools with 50 different programs for nursing careers. Florence Nightingale, an early pioneer of the nursing profession and hospital sanitation, would be very pleased.

Today’s nurses are far different from 100 years ago, 50 years ago or even 20 years ago. In the last 10 – 15 years, the nursing profession has seen a steady increase of male students enrolling and graduating from these programs. Additionally, the nursing profession has seen the explosion of minorities enrolling and graduating from various nursing programs.

Thankfully, local, regional and national organizations are available at both the student and professional levels to guide and assist those interested in nursing as a career or those already employed.
