Career Planning

Why should you worry about a career choice when you're in high school?  Don't you have enough to worry about right now - classes, grades, social media updates, and what you're going to wear to school tomorrow? Should you be trying to decide what you want to be when you "grow up"? Something to think about while you are on your high school journey, is your plan for the future.  This is the time in your life when you should be looking for answers to the following questions:

  • Do you plan to go to college or a trade school after high school?
  • Have you considered a career, and if so, do you know the expected earnings of someone in that particular field or occupation?
  • Do you know the cost of the school you plan to attend vs. the expected salary you will earn after completing your schooling?
  • Will you have to borrow student loans in order to pay for college?
  • Do you have a backup plan, or secondary interest, in case the field you are currently interested in doesn't pan out for you as a major in college?
  • Have you taken some sort of skills assessment or career survey to determine where your interests translate into an occupation?
There are many career assessment tests that can assist you in choosing an occupation, training program, or major in college. A few free on-line resources are listed below, but also be sure to check with your high school guidance counselor for more resources.
